{"id":1745,"date":"2014-07-30T10:29:45","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T15:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/?p=1745"},"modified":"2014-07-30T10:29:45","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T15:29:45","slug":"my-journey-to-america-july-30-1914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/my-journey-to-america-july-30-1914\/","title":{"rendered":"My Journey To America: July 30, 1914"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exactly 100 years ago today, my 18 year old grandfather, Kurt William Leucht, wrote the following entry into his journal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0I got up at 5:00am.\u00a0 At 7:00, we had to go to the luggage hall where the suitcases were managed.\u00a0 From there, we were quickly transported to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ellis_Island\">Ellis Island<\/a> <i>[via ferry]<\/i> where we were examined. \u00a0We came into a large hall where everyone was shown to a specific location.<\/p>\n<p>Since I had given the address of my uncle, I was directed to go to an area for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peoria,_Illinois\">Peoria, Illinois<\/a> <i>[Peoria is 170 miles SW of Chicago]<\/i>.\u00a0 Then I came to the luggage room, where I had to find my things.\u00a0 I got my ticket to Peoria, which cost $18, and that was that.\u00a0 We had to wait until 3:00pm to get on a ship which left at 5:00 for the train station. \u00a0<i>[This was likely a ferry from Ellis Island to the mainland.]<\/i>\u00a0 Everyone was decorated with a large piece of paper.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have to ask, every employee knew where we belonged.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in the train station until 7:00, then we were led to the ready trains.\u00a0 Shortly before 7:30, the train began to move.\u00a0 There were twelve Germans in my section of the train and we made ourselves comfortable.\u00a0 There was no difference between First and Fourth Class.\u00a0 Every section of the train was the same and was furnished something like our Second Class.\u00a0 Now the train was moving thru New York City, beyond and to the West <i>[towards the city of Chicago]<\/i>.\u00a0 Night came and we laid down to sleep as good as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can read my grandfather&#8217;s entire journal and see photos of Ellis Island from the early 1900&#8217;s by clicking below. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite interesting! \u00a0Of course, I&#8217;m biased! \u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/history\/My_Journey_To_America-Journal_of_Kurt_William_Leucht-1914_to_1920.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/history\/My_Journey_To_America-Journal_of_Kurt_William_Leucht-1914_to_1920.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks for your interest!<br \/>\nKurt<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exactly 100 years ago today, my 18 year old grandfather, Kurt William Leucht, wrote the following entry into his journal: \u00a0I got up at 5:00am.\u00a0 At 7:00, we had to go to the luggage hall where the suitcases were managed.\u00a0 From there, we were quickly transported to Ellis Island [via ferry] where we were examined.
