{"id":2027,"date":"2015-02-08T17:17:58","date_gmt":"2015-02-08T22:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/?p=2027"},"modified":"2015-02-08T17:22:54","modified_gmt":"2015-02-08T22:22:54","slug":"a-good-reason-to-shave-your-beard-for-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/a-good-reason-to-shave-your-beard-for-science\/","title":{"rendered":"A good reason to shave your beard &#8230; for science!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I normally don&#8217;t shave my beard unless I&#8217;m in a show that requires it, but you may have noticed me sporting a clean and smooth young looking face recently. \u00a0Well, this time I did it for science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2029\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing1.jpg\" alt=\"cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing1-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I recently volunteered to be a test subject for the medical research folks at NASA\/KSC. \u00a0They have invented a new cryogenic or liquid air breathing pack which has been bench-top tested using a mechanical breathing machine\u00a0and now they need to test it out on real live\u00a0breathing machines, or human test subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The reason I needed to be clean shaven is that the folks running the test needed really good data, including mask pressure, so the respirator needed to make a good tight seal around my nose and mouth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2030\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing2.jpg\" alt=\"cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing2\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing2.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing2-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a very long 2 hour physical test regimen, and I performed the test regimen\u00a0three separate times. \u00a0The photo below was taken early enough in one of\u00a0the test sessions\u00a0that I still had a smile on my face! \u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2031\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing3-914x1024.jpg\" alt=\"cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing3\" width=\"474\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing3-914x1024.jpg 914w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing3-357x400.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This breathing pack needed to be tested in several different situations, including crawling on the ground, laying on either\u00a0side, laying on the back, walking and running on the treadmill, lifting a weight off the ground using a pulley, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2032\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing4-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing4\" width=\"474\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the sessions even involved carrying an extra 50 pounds up a steep incline and back down several times. \u00a0The breathing pack already weighed about 40 pounds, so this was pretty tiring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2033\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5-1024x705.jpg\" alt=\"cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5\" width=\"474\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5-1024x705.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5-400x275.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cryo_breathing_air_pack_testing5.jpg 1587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After this breathing pack is tested by several different test subjects, it could be qualified for use someday by mine workers, firefighters, rescue workers, etc. \u00a0That&#8217;s NASA technology at work for you!
