Trip To Malmo, Sweden: The Sights"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Malmo Sweden<\/h1>\n<p>Last week after speaking at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oredev.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00d6redev software developer conference<\/a> in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malm%C3%B6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malmo, Sweden<\/a>, my wife and I had the opportunity to see some of the sights around town.<\/p>\n<p>The weather there was pretty mild with highs around 45 of 50 degF and lows around 35 or 40.\u00a0 It rained one afternoon and one full day while we were there, but the rest of the time it was partly sunny.\u00a0 The cold wind never really settled down, though.\u00a0 It was most definitely hat, gloves, and scarf weather.\u00a0 And this &#8220;Florida boy&#8221; (Florida transplant, really) doesn&#8217;t even own a scarf!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/00-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/00-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Malmo is the third largest city in Sweden, but it&#8217;s not a huge city.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the same size as the city limits of Orlando Florida.\u00a0 Not including the surrounding communities.\u00a0 Just the city limits proper.\u00a0 So imagine if you were driving away from downtown Orlando and as soon as you hit the city limit a few miles out, it became rural countryside.\u00a0 That&#8217;s Malmo Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>Malmo is located at the very southern tip of Sweden, which is a very very long country north to south.\u00a0 Sweden is actually the same height as America, from the top of North Dakota to the southern tip of Texas!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3115\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/malmo-on-sweden-map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/malmo-on-sweden-map.png 256w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/malmo-on-sweden-map-186x400.png 186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This photo shows several hotels along the canal.\u00a0 This area of town has lots of canals and waterways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/\u00d8resund_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00d8resund Bridge<\/a>.\u00a0 This bridge crosses between Sweden and Denmark.\u00a0 Part of this bridge is over <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%98resund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the sound<\/a> (the strait) and part of it tunnels underground (and under the water).\u00a0 We went over this bridge 4 times while we were in town.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/02-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3076\" setting for the popular Swedish\/Danish TV crime drama titled <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bridge_(2011_TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Bridge<\/a>.\u00a0 I have not seen the TV show, but I&#8217;m told it is quite good.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a photo taken from the beach of the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turning_Torso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turning Torso<\/a> building.\u00a0\u00a0It is the first twisted skyscraper in the world!\u00a0 It is mostly apartments, which is pretty cool for those residents!\u00a0 It&#8217;s not cheap to live there!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/03-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img beach, shows a building in the sound called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ribersborgs_open-air_bath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ribersborgs Kallbadhus<\/a>, which is an open-air bath.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically a walled structure on the water with pool decks and stairs and ramps into the water for easy access\u00a0 to swimming in the sound.\u00a0 It also has saunas for quickly jumping from hot to cold and back.\u00a0 Clothes are optional at places like this and my wife and I decided that it was not for us.\u00a0 \u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Also, it was quite cold.<\/p>\n<p>I have one word for these people:\u00a0 <strong>Pneumonia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also I have one more word:\u00a0 <strong>Shrinkage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do women even know about shrinkage?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/05-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" office building that was across the street from our hotel.\u00a0 It&#8217;s right outside the central train station entrance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a outside the central train station entrance.\u00a0 I thought it was a cool melding of modern or contemporary architecture and old or historic architecture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malm\u00f6#\/media\/File:Jorchr-Malm%C3%B6_r%C3%A5dhus.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malmo&#8217;s Old City Hall<\/a> building was beautiful inside and out.\u00a0 We were honored to have dinner there one night with the other conference speakers.\u00a0 But the facade was undergoing renovation, so it was mostly covered up.\u00a0 We could only get a view of the below small portion of the historic and beautiful building.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/08-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" the downtown area of Malmo.\u00a0 We noticed that bicyclists in Malmo are highly regarded by city planners.\u00a0 In many areas of the city, the bike lanes were quite impressive.\u00a0 Most intersections even had a set of stoplights for the cars, plus a smaller set of stoplights for the bikes, and then a third set of crossing lights for the pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Pedestrians are definitely third class citizens to the bikers.\u00a0 If you accidentally walk in a bike lane, you are likely to get run over by a speeding bike!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/09-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3083\" This was just the display at a small bakery at the central train station!\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 Super fancy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malm\u00f6_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malmo Castle<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically right in the middle of downtown.\u00a0 It&#8217;s surrounded by a moat.\u00a0 And there is a museum inside.\u00a0 Sadly, we arrived too late to experience it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3085 aligncenter\" in Malmo in early November and it got dark at like 4pm!\u00a0 Southern Sweden and Denmark are at the same latitude as the southern parts of Alaska.\u00a0 During the day, I never saw the sun get above what I would consider the 10am position in the sky!\u00a0 By the time 6 or 7pm rolled around, we felt like it was 10 or 11pm!\u00a0 Crazy!\u00a0 This extremely early darkness hampered some of our tourism in the area.\u00a0 And it definitely hampered a lot of our photography of the area.<\/p>\n<p>There are several different open-air squares in Malmo.\u00a0 In the square below, there were some nice big trees that were decorated for the holidays with large lights and large ornaments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/12-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3086 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/12-malmo-sweden-1024x694.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/12-malmo-sweden-1024x694.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/12-malmo-sweden-400x271.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/12-malmo-sweden-768x520.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are quite a few grassy parks in Malmo.\u00a0 I noticed that many of them are actually cemeteries.\u00a0 But unlike the cemeteries in the US that I&#8217;ve experienced, these cemeteries sequester their burial plots into small squares and leave room for walking and playing in between.\u00a0 Interesting concept, sharing the grassy park with the deceased.\u00a0 It seemed a little strange at first.\u00a0 But I think I like the idea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/13-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3087\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/13-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/13-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/13-malmo-sweden-400x300.jpg residents live in apartment buildings.\u00a0 So gardening is totally out of the question for most residents.\u00a0 Except for those that buy one of these garden plots.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an area with small plots of land that you can build a tiny house or a shed on and you can grow grass or trees and bushes or even a full blown garden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/14-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3088\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/14-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._John%27s_Church,_Malm\u00f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. John&#8217;s Church<\/a>.\u00a0 It has a very smooth and rounded sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This awesome church is <a href=\"https:\/\/sv.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sankt_Pauli_kyrka,_Malm\u00f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Pauli Church<\/a>.\u00a0 It has a large central tower surrounded by 12 smaller towers which represent Jesus and the disciples.\u00a0 It has a very sharp and rigid and angular architecture.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost shocking to look at.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/17-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3091\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/17-malmo-sweden-1024x833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"386\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caroli_Church,_Malm\u00f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caroli Church<\/a>.\u00a0 It was created for the German population that was living in Malmo in the 17th century.\u00a0 At that time, the Germans didn&#8217;t have a church in Malmo and had to attend church across the sound in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copenhagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagen Denmark<\/a>.\u00a0 Which back then was probably not real easy to get to.\u00a0 This church was designed by the same architect as the St Pauli Church above and you can see the similarities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/18-malmo-sweden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3092\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/18-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/18-malmo-sweden-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/18-malmo-sweden-400x300.jpg see while we were in town was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malmochokladfabrik.se\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malmo Chocolate Factory and Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 But we got there sort of late.\u00a0 Well, it was only 3pm on a Saturday.\u00a0 But they had just closed.\u00a0 So we missed that, which would have been pretty cool, we think.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow I\u2019ll publish a blog post about some
