It rained lightly one afternoon and one full day while I was there, but the rest of the time it was partly sunny.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/berlin-on-world-map.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3312\" Germany.\u00a0 It&#8217;s located in the north east of Germany.<\/p>\n<h1>Fernsehturm (Television Tower)<\/h1>\n<p>In the middle of Berlin is this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fernsehturm_Berlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge TV Tower<\/a>!\u00a0 It&#8217;s impossible to miss!\u00a0 The giant shiny sphere towards the top has an observation level and a rotating restaurant!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-tv-tower-selfie.jpg\"><img sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the tower was built back in the late 60&#8217;s, it was intended to be a symbol of Communist power.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s the tallest Column)<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_Victory_Column\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Siegess\u00e4ule<\/a>, which literally translates into Victory Column, is also centrally located in Berlin.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually smack in the middle of a huge park which is sort of like Central Park in New York City.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiergarten_(park)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gro\u00dfer (Great) Tiergarten (Zoo) Park<\/a> is Berlin&#8217;s oldest and largest park.\u00a0 And as you might suspect by the name, it has a pretty awesome zoo inside!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-victory-column-selfie.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3279\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-victory-column-selfie-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Victory Column was built in the late 1800s to commemorate several recent war victories.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually bigger than it looks in photos.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about 20 stories tall and tourists can actually climb an internal spiral staircase to an outdoor viewing platform at the top of the tower, just under the gold statue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2-victory-column.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3281\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2-victory-column-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" the four massive bronze reliefs that are mounted on the four sides of the base.\u00a0 You can see that there are some bullet holes in the relief from the second World War and there are also some bronze pieces of the relief that are missing, like both rear legs of the second horse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a base had several small chunks missing as it was damaged a bit during the war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brandenburg_Gate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brandenburg Gate<\/a> is probably the best known, most photographed landmarks in Germany.\u00a0 It was built in the late 1700s, so it&#8217;s quite old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-brandenburg-gate-selfie.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3286\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-brandenburg-gate-selfie-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It used to be a customs gate for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.\u00a0 Through the years, many political parties (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/berlin-sa-marching-through-the-brandenburg-gate-in-the-news-photo\/3426582#\/16th-september-1934-berlin-sa-marching-through-the-brandenburg-gate-picture-id3426582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including the Nazis<\/a>) have paraded through the gate as a symbol of their strength and victory.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.ca\/detail\/news-photo\/eastward-view-to-the-berlin-wall-in-front-of-the-news-photo\/544573185#\/eastward-view-to-the-berlin-wall-in-front-of-the-brandenburg-gate-picture-id544573185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Berlin Wall, which was built nearby, stopped all traffic through the gate for nearly three decades<\/a>.\u00a0 After the Berlin Wall fell, the entire area became a pedestrian plaza, so vehicles no longer travel through this gate.<\/p>\n<p>This is what it looks like from the east.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum Island<\/a> in the middle of Berlin, a hotspot area for tourism.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite a big church and it stands out easily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1-dom-cathedral-selfie.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" stairs to a small museum containing some really cool plaster models of various parts of the church.\u00a0 These plaster models were used as part of the design process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: look down toward the alter from the main dome above.\u00a0 That was pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a tour takes tourists outside the main dome at this high level!\u00a0 And they can walk around the entire main dome out there!\u00a0 That was super cool!\u00a0 I was totally not expecting that to be part of the tour!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/8-dom-cathedral-outside-dome.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" amazing!\u00a0 And just a little scary!\u00a0 The people down on the ground looked like little ants!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a first couple photos of the exterior of the cathedral, you can see exactly where I was standing.\u00a0 You can see the railing and the statues going around the main dome on the exterior of the cathedral.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really crazy to me that they even let tourists out here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/10-dom-cathedral-outside-dome.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3302\" inside the Berlin Cathedral were the fancy burial caskets at the back of the main sanctuary.\u00a0 The caskets were all behind bars, but they were still on prominent display.\u00a0 There were quite a few caskets.\u00a0 They apparently hold the remains of past royalty and past church leaders and such.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/11-dom-cathedral-creepy-caskets.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3304\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/11-dom-cathedral-creepy-caskets-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/11-dom-cathedral-creepy-caskets-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/11-dom-cathedral-creepy-caskets-400x300.jpg 400w, me since I&#8217;m not used to seeing burial caskets placed above the ground.\u00a0 One of the caskets even had this scary looking skeleton dude sitting at the foot of his casket.\u00a0 Writing down his name in his book of death, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/12-dom-cathedral-creepy-statues.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3305\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/12-dom-cathedral-creepy-statues-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/12-dom-cathedral-creepy-statues-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/12-dom-cathedral-creepy-statues-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Continuing with the creepy decor, on the wall beneath the big beautiful pipe organ, were these two faceless ghostly looking statues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/13-dom-cathedral-creepy-ghosts.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3306\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/13-dom-cathedral-creepy-ghosts-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" creepy for me since the tourists basically have to walk through the basement &#8220;crypt&#8221; in order to exit the place.\u00a0 Through the gift shop, of course.\u00a0 This whole basement crypt thing is probably pretty common, but it was a first for me.\u00a0 And I was not expecting to have to walk through a ton of really really old burial caskets in a very large and pretty dark basement room, on my way out of the cathedral.\u00a0 I lightened the below photo quite a bit.\u00a0 Believe me, it was pretty dark in that crypt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/14-dom-cathedral-creepy-crypt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3307\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/14-dom-cathedral-creepy-crypt-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/14-dom-cathedral-creepy-crypt-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/14-dom-cathedral-creepy-crypt-400x300.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/14-dom-cathedral-creepy-crypt-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of these old caskets appeared to be made out of metal.\u00a0 Several of them were super old and it looked like they were even starting to cave in under the weight of their covers.\u00a0 The second casket in the above photo even appeared to have a couple of bars installed across its cover with bolts attached down into the cover to keep it from caving in more than it already had.\u00a0 That casket was dated 1601.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty old.<\/p>\n<p>One of the last caskets that was on display in this crypt was actually an infant.\u00a0 It had it&#8217;s own little well lit room, along with a painting of the funeral and mourning parents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/15-dom-cathedral-creepy-ish-baby-casket.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3308\" said:\u00a0\u00a0Nameless Princess &#8211;\u00a0Daughter of Prince Adalbert and Princess Adelheid of Saxe-Meiningen,\u00a0Granddaughter of Emperor Wilkelm II, September 4, 1915<\/p>\n<p>Nothing like
