Rockets are basically complex systems of other complex systems that all have to work together perfectly.  Also, they&#8217;re highly explosive. So creating a brand new rocket can take a while. (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Yeah, I know it's a terrible name (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceflightinsider.com\/organizations\/nasa\/whats-name-nasa-naming-contest-sls-nothing-new\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yeah, I know it&#8217;s a terrible name<\/a>.  That&#8217;s not under my control, though.)  SLS is going to replace the retired <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Space Shuttle (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle\" target=\"_blank\">Space Shuttle<\/a>. It will loft <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"humans  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/astronauts\" target=\"_blank\">humans <\/a>and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"spacecraft  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orion_(spacecraft)\" target=\"_blank\">spacecraft <\/a>into low earth orbit <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"and beyond (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/exploration\/systems\/sls\/to-the-moon.html\" target=\"_blank\">and beyond<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/sls\/multimedia\/gallery\/sls-through-clouds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"330\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/sls-in-flight-1024x330.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3926\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/sls-in-flight-1024x330.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/sls-in-flight-400x129.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/sls-in-flight-768x248.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SLS was funded starting in late 2010 and it&#8217;s first uncrewed test flight called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Artemis 1 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artemis_1\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 1<\/a>, as of this writing, is scheduled to launch in late 2020.  A lot of smart people will argue about why it took so long and who is at fault. These pretty awesome 360 degree videos show us lifting it up inside the VAB and then lowering it down into its resting place on the mobile launcher.  Unless you&#8217;re watching these videos with a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Virtual Reality rig (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/us\/best-vr-headsets,review-3550.html\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Reality rig<\/a>, just click and drag your mouse to change the point of view!
