{"id":1734,"date":"2014-07-23T10:26:16","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T15:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/?p=1734"},"modified":"2014-07-23T10:26:16","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T15:26:16","slug":"my-journey-to-america-july-23-1914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/my-journey-to-america-july-23-1914\/","title":{"rendered":"My Journey To America: July 23, 1914"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exactly 100 years ago today, my 18 year old grandfather, Kurt William Leucht, wrote the following entry into his journal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I got up at 5:30am.\u00a0 I was on the deck at 6:00 when land came into view.\u00a0 We were getting closer and closer to Great Britain.\u00a0 English warships and sail ships were in sight.\u00a0 At 11:00am, two English steamships came closer to the Vaterland.\u00a0 Our ship traveled slower.\u00a0 The steamships finally connected to our ship.\u00a0 One received the luggage, the other took on the passengers that were going on to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southampton\">South Hampton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our ship stayed in place until 2:00pm, then continued on with full steam.\u00a0 Around 5:30, France came into view.\u00a0 I could see the fortifications on the land.\u00a0 Again two ships came.\u00a0 At 7:30, we went on our way.\u00a0 When it became dark, there was hearty dancing again on deck.\u00a0 I went to bed at 11:00.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/journal-map-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1735\" alt=\"journal-map-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/journal-map-2-400x227.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/journal-map-2-400x227.png 400w, https:\/\/www.leucht.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/journal-map-2.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can read my grandfather&#8217;s entire journal by clicking below.
