Nose & Sinus Surgery

Kurt has been home for the past week recovering from endoscopic sinus surgery and deviated septum correction. He and the doctor are hopeful that these procedures will allow him to have less sinus infections and also less ear infections in the future. The recovery from the sinus part was really pretty painless. Guess there aren’t too many pain receptors around your sinus cavities. The deviated septum surgery is the only soreness that Kurt is experiencing right now. But the nose and upper jaw soreness is tolerable and Kurt is going back to work this week.

(Kurts Sinuses from the front)

In this front view CAT-scan, taken before the surgery, you can clearly see both my deviated septum (the middle part of my nose) and my “benign semitransparent nasal lesion” (which is a fancy medical term for “tissue in the sinus cavity that doesn’t belong there and is not cancerous”) on the left side under my eye. The sinus cavity on the right side of the image is black, which means there is no abnormal tissue inside there … only air.

In this bottom view CAT-scan, also taken before the surgery, you can also clearly see both problems.

Blog Engine Upgraded

Just in case anyone has actually been reading this Blog … I upgraded to a new WordPress version this evening, but don’t quite have all the bugs worked out yet so the site looks a bit off right now. All the content is there, it’s just that the sidebar is not always displaying up where it should be. It’s way past bed time, so I’ll have to work on it a bit more on another day.

Honorable Mention: Woot PhotoChop Contest #174

Ive been a Woot (woot.com, what is Woot) customer since May of 2006, buying cheap electronics here and there whenever I saw Woot offering something that I really needed. When I subscribed to the Woot RSS feeds (so I wouldnt forget to check the daily sale) I noticed that they were holding weekly Photo-chopping contests there. And they were actually giving away monetary prizes too, or at least monetary credit for purchases on Woot! Ive got a little bit of Photo-chopping experience, so I started keeping my eyes open for a contest theme that I would enjoy working on. Then Woot Contest 174 caught my eye.

The Challenge: Show us how we can get rid of thousands of unsold Sandisk Sansa Media Players.

The idea that immediately came to mind was to use thousands of these cheap little electronic devices to build a supercomputer … or actually a not-so-super-computer.

Here is the Sansa image I used from Woot:

And here is the super computer image I used from Mississippi State University:

And here is my contest entry (http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=2265560):

I spent probably 2 hours on this entry. A pro could have probably done it in 20 minutes, but I’m not that experienced … plus the TV was on while I was working on it. It was fun, though. I especially enjoyed turning the SUN microsystems logo on the side of the rack into Sandisk. I think it turned out rather well.

I didn’t win a monetary prize, but I was honored with an “Honorable Mention” which is worth free shipping on my next Woot purchase. Here are the complete results for Woot Contest 174.

Door to door salesman repellant

This is how we get rid of door to door salesmen

.Yellow Rat Snake on door

.Yellow Rat Snake on door

Just kidding. This is a little yellow rat snake we found “hanging out” at our front door the other day. I’ve seen a couple of these yellow rat snakes around here. A really big one and this little one. Neither has shown any aggression and I guess they’ll keep the rodents away. So I guess I’m not really bothered by them being around. The only other type of snake I’ve seen around here are the little black racers. They’re pretty common in this area and completely harmless. I witnessed a black racer catching and eating a little lizard once. That was pretty cool.

What’s wrong with this sign?

I recently saw this sign at the Sanford airport. I knew where I was going when I saw the sign, but the sign actually confused me and made me stop and think about whether I was going the right direction. I knew the mens bathroom was on the left, but the woman/man figures were on the wrong side. I wonder how many people see this sign and actually go into the wrong bathroom because of it.
